Why a Windshield Chip in Jefferson City Needs to Be Fixed Before Winter
That small chip in your windshield might not seem like a big deal right now. It's not in your line of sight, it's not spreading — at least not yet. But if you're driving around Jefferson City or anywhere in mid-Missouri with an unrepaired chip heading into fall and winter, you're rolling the dice on a problem that gets significantly more expensive the longer it sits.
Here's what's actually happening inside that chip, and why temperature and moisture make it so much worse.
What's Happening Inside a Windshield Chip
A windshield is made of laminated safety glass — two layers of glass bonded to a plastic interlayer. When a rock or piece of road debris strikes the glass with enough force, it creates a break in the outer layer. That break, whether it's a bull's-eye, a star pattern, or a partial crack, creates a void in the glass.
That void is the problem. Air and moisture enter the damaged area almost immediately. Once moisture is trapped inside a chip, it has nowhere to go — and when temperatures drop, water expands as it freezes. That expansion puts pressure on the surrounding glass from the inside, forcing the crack to grow. What was a quarter-inch chip in October can become a six-inch crack by January without your windshield taking any additional impact.
Missouri winters don't help. Jefferson City averages overnight temperatures below freezing for much of December through February, with temperature swings of 30 to 40 degrees in a single day being common. Every freeze-thaw cycle puts that trapped moisture through another expansion-and-contraction cycle, and every cycle works against the integrity of the glass around the chip.
Why a Controlled Environment Matters for Repair
Mobile windshield repair exists and is a convenient option — Expert Glass offers mobile service throughout central Missouri for passenger vehicles. But there's an important limitation to understand: temperature and moisture conditions at the repair site affect the outcome of a chip repair.
The repair process involves injecting a specialized resin into the damaged area, then curing it with ultraviolet light. That resin needs to flow into the void cleanly and cure properly to restore the structural integrity of the glass. When it's cold outside, the resin becomes thicker and less able to penetrate the fine channels of the break. When it's humid or the glass has moisture in the chip, the resin can't bond properly to the glass.
This is why, for best results — particularly on chips that have been exposed to moisture or cold — repair in a controlled shop environment gives the technician the best chance of a complete, clean repair. We ask for about 24 hours of dry time before we can fill it, so the sooner you get it checked after a storm passes, the better.
Chip Repair vs. Full Replacement: What Determines the Outcome
Not every chip can be repaired — and that distinction matters because a repair costs a fraction of a full windshield replacement. Whether a chip is repairable depends on its size, type, location, and how long it's been exposed to the elements.
Generally, a chip smaller than a quarter — regardless of where it's located on the windshield — is a good candidate for repair. The most important factor is moisture: the chip needs to have stayed completely dry for at least 12 hours before it can be filled. If moisture has worked its way into the break, it affects the quality and appearance of the repair, and chips that have sat through wet weather are harder to repair cleanly because the void is already compromised.
The longer a chip sits unrepaired, the more likely it becomes that replacement is the only option. And replacement — while something Expert Glass handles efficiently — costs considerably more than a repair. Many insurance policies cover chip repairs with no deductible precisely because insurers know a $75 repair today prevents a $300-400 replacement claim later.
Don't Wait for the Crack to Tell You It's Time
The frustrating thing about chip-to-crack progression is that it rarely gives much warning. A chip can sit stable for weeks, then expand overnight when temperatures drop sharply. By the time you notice the crack running across your windshield in the morning, the window for a simple repair has already closed.
